We currently have a new position for an Executive Editor for Project Management. Reporting to the VP/Editorial Director of the College Editorial Group, this position is located in our Boston office. Leading a team of project managers and other editorial specialists, the Executive Editor is responsible for managing schedules, budgets, outsourcing, and other administrative functions associated with materials development, including oversight of the editorial production phase. This role works closely with the Executive Editor for Development to see that all texts and components meet VHL high standards for marketability, editorial accuracy, pedagogical soundness, and stylistic clarity, as defined in VHL’s content and style guidelines. Primary responsibilities include:
- Recruits, trains, and supervises a small staff which includes project managers, freelancers and editorial specialists
- Works with VP/Editorial Director to establish and maintain project management guidelines and processes that ensure products are published on schedule and meet high standards
- Oversees contracting process for outside freelancers and/or development houses
- Oversees trafficking of materials; ensures that editorial staff members file and store all critical electronic project files, as well as important print materials
- Manages the gathering and tracking of corrigenda and coordinates reprints with the Production and Manufacturing teams
- Works with Finance and Administration to develop and track editorial budgets for ongoing projects
- Functions as the liaison between Editorial and Production, Design, Manufacturing, Finance, Marketing and Sales
- Provides regular project status reports to the VP/ED
- In collaboration with the Executive Editor for Development, ensures that project management staff adhere to and implement VHL’s quality assurance guidelines and processes
The ideal candidate possesses:
- 5+ years in educational publishing, preferably for the College market
- 2+ years’ experience managing an in-house editorial staff
- Fluency or near native fluency in Spanish; ability to oversee quality of Spanish proofreaders
- Proven ability to track project budget, resources, timelines and processes on multiple projects
- Excellent problem solving skills; deep attention to detail
- Excellent written/verbal communication skills
- Experience implementing new processes and procedures; ability to identify obstacles to progress and find solutions
- Familiarity with foreign language education, classroom practice and products. Past experience in teaching or education-related product development, marketing or sales is a plus.
- Proven ability to lead a team, create a supportive work climate, and deliver results as a team. Previous experience working with cross-functional teams is a plus.
- Experience with MS Project, MS Office Suite, Adobe Professional; familiarity with InDesign/Incopy
