SENIOR DESIGNER


Vista Higher Learning, a leading language publisher for the U.S. and Canadian education markets, develops textbooks, online courseware and educational components.  Our programs are developed after extensive market research and careful consultation with educators and researchers as well as publishing and pedagogical professionals.  We bring a fresh new approach to the learning of languages by integrating technology, design, content and pedagogy to make learning easier, more practical, and more rewarding. 

As a part of the Production and Design Team, the Senior Designer is responsible for overseeing the production of high quality design for books and online materials to support our fast-growing foreign language publishing program.  Primary responsibilities include:

  •     Leading and training both in-house designers and freelancers
  •     Overseeing the review of book pages in InDesign, InCopy, and PDF formats for quality, consistency and accuracy
  •     Working closely with Director of Production and Design to manage the budget and purchasing
  •     Providing feedback on book pages for quality, consistency, accuracy and adherence to templates
  •     Working closely with the Director of Production and Design and the Production Manager to oversee all projects to meet deadlines and assign resources according to the needs of the projects and schedules
  •     Overseeing the creation of templates
  •     Working closely with the Director of Production and Design to realize product vision as well as working closely with the Creative Designer
  •     Working closely with Production and Editors to implement templates, style sheets, and efficient workflow
  •     Providing status reports on projects to Director of Production and Design
  •     Attending project meetings and following projects from concept through finished product
  •     Revising electronic art to fill specifications from Editorial team
  •     Guiding and supporting designers to obtain and direct illustrations, commissioning illustrations as needed
  •     Identifying and communicating key responsibilities and practices and ensuring that design team works together to achieve business results
  •     Working closely with Production, Editorial, and Marketing teams
  •     Interfacing with the Design and Production teams working in Colombia, overseeing select design projects and page review with junior designers

The ideal candidate possesses a BA or BFA; the ability to lead and train designers, both staff and freelancers; the ability to manage multiple projects including budgets and the purchasing process; superior knowledge and proficiency in Adobe InDesign (CS2 Mac/CS3 PC), InCopy, Photoshop, and Illustrator, including creation of templates and efficient InCopy/InDesign workflow; experience using Microsoft Office Suite with strong PC skills; strong communication skills; the ability to evaluate and commission appropriate art including photos and illustrations; excellent organizational and time management skills; and flexibility with the ability to work in a highly dynamic, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Publishing experience in education is a plus. Foreign language ability in Spanish, French, Italian and/or German is desirable.
