Engineering Manager

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager with strong full-stack experience to manage a small team of talented software engineers. In this role, you will lead specific feature development projects and will be relied on to provide architectural guidance for other engineers. As an Engineering Manager you’ll have opportunities to collaborate with other Lead Engineers and Managers to define the roadmap, process, budgeting and architectural planning as well as drive various aspects of lifestyle development (planning, design, standups, iteration review and, feature releases etc.). At VHL, our Engineering leadership all play ‘hands-on’ roles. So while you manage a team, you are also actively involved in analyzing, designing, writing, testing and implementing clean, performant, maintainable and testable code.

  • Hosting: Rackspace, AWS

What you bring to the party:

  • BA/ BS in computer science or other related field or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience working in web deployment (experience in ed-tech or education fields, a strong plus) with at least 2 years of experience in a managerial/ mentoring function
  • Previous success building and developing high-performing engineering teams in dynamic agile environments
  • Experience building and deploying high-capacity applications in cloud environments (AWS)
  • Strong command of Ruby/Rails, Javascript and or Python
  • Experience with MySQL, Postgres, Redis, Elasticsearch, and or Redshift
  • Experience with Linux (especially Ubuntu/ Debian)
  • Proficiency with object oriented analysis and design
  • Experience managing and working well with geographically distributed teams as well as highly collaborative environments
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Some proficiency in Spanish is a strong plus

Additional responsibilities:

  • Hire, train, develop and mentor a small team of Software Engineers
  • Implement wireframes, feature stories, specifications, visual interfaces and graphic assets
  • Oversee and manage external resources (contractors and vendors)
  • Address customer issues in collaboration with tech-support and product management
