Editorial Director

As an Editorial Director, you are relied on to leverage your considerable editorial expertise to direct, define, create and manage content and project road-maps for a variety of culturally authentic World Language (French, Spanish, German & Italian) print and digital programs.  In this role, you will lead a team of Development Editors, Editorial Assistants and other editorial specialists and provide guidance on quality standards, pedagogy and best-practices for creating and editing culturally authentic content geared towards K-12/ Higher-Ed World Language learning. As a hands-on leader you will also contribute to the publication plan by owning and participating in content related deliverables. In addition to strong people management, writing and editorial skills, a compelling candidate will have equally strong project management and problem solving skills, as well as possess a keen eye for grammar in English as well as French or Spanish, and is extremely detail oriented. A true passion for languages, learning and education is essential!

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in and contribute to strategy discussions on VHL’s technology development and publication plan for the K-12 & Higher Ed product lines; provide critical evaluation of product and business needs, and document business requirements.
  • Partner closely with Publisher and Editorial Directors to establish and maintain editorial development guidelines and processes.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in the areas of Project Management, Tech Production, Product Management, Permissions, Photo and Design to establish effective and efficient processes and workflows between groups.
  • Oversee the development functions, including: conceptualizing, planning, budgeting and prototyping of new product; managing the writing and editing phases of manuscript development; and researching and selecting third-party content, such as films, videos, news articles, and literature. Ensures that staff members adhere to and implement VHL’s quality assurance guidelines and processes. Ensures that staff members file and store critical electronic manuscript and all relevant print materials in a secure and appropriate manner.
  • Manage editorial department budget including forecasting external costs such as freelancers
  • Manage a small team of in-house and off-shore Development Editors, Editorial Managers, Assistants and freelancers as well as train, direct and mentor staff on applying editorial quality guidelines.
  • Conceptualize and plan for all aspects of large-scale World Language products (in print and digital)
  • Lead projects & team meetings and develop department-wide quality guidelines and best practice procedures, including training documents.
  • Supports the Sales and Marketing teams from an editorial perspective by acting as a product expert for teacher/ professor queries, preparing documents for and presenting at Company Sales Meetings.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • BA/ BS degree, advanced degree preferred
  • 7+ years of editorial experience in foreign language curriculum materials development coupled with a strong understanding of the American market for world-language education at either the Higher Education or Secondary level.
  • 2+ years of experience managing and building highly functional editorial teams
  • Must possess native proficiency (written and verbal) in English in addition to near native proficiency in French and/ or Spanish. Additional proficiency in Italian or German is a strong plus.
  • Strong understanding of both pedagogical and market issues in foreign language teaching and learning as well as some familiarity with competitive products and trends in the marketplace
  • Strategic and efficient in planning and executing to ensure consistent on-time delivery of product; able to present program plans, including the marketing story, as well as finished products to senior management, the sales force, and customers.
  • Successful track record in planning, writing, and editing content for large-scale print/digital educational products with high regard to quality and schedule.
  • Well-developed communication and project management skills. Demonstrates sound decision-making skills coupled with the ability to craft creative solutions to editorial challenges.
  • Excellent writing, grammar, spelling, proofreading skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills - both written and verbally.
  • Strong project management skills and experience; able to set priorities and meet deadlines for self and others.
  • Ability to work in a fluid and fast paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Strong MS Word and MS Excel skills. Experience with Adobe, K4 or InDesign is a strong plus!
  • Prior experience teaching is a strong plus
  • A passion for travel and languages is a must!
