I fell in love with literacy and language through AmeriCorps, teaching Adult Literacy and English as a New Language to adult immigrants in Little Rock, Arkansas when I was 19 years old. From there, I used my AmeriCorps scholarship to study Spanish in Mexico and became the first person in my family to get a passport and travel outside the US.
Learning Spanish opened so many doors for me and I was able to work in places I never could have dreamed of, including teaching women's literact at a nonprofit in Cochabamba, Bolivia and teaching English in Madrid, Spain.
I came back to the US determined to open doors for others through language learning. After obtaining my Master’s in teaching foreign languages and Spanish literature at The University of Arkansas (Woo Pig Sooie!), I began teaching High School Spanish in New Orleans, Louisiana before teaching in and coordinating a K-8 ELL Program in a New Orleans Charter School District.
I am honored to be a part of Vista Higher Learning’s team as I not only love all things related to literacy and language acquisition, but also the people who are drawn to this work who believe in helping others and supporting them as they build their new exciting opportunities!
