My first memory of learning a second language dates back to when I was just beginning to read. We had visitors trying to learn English, and my innovative mother helped by putting masking tape labels with both Spanish and English phrases on doors and cabinets with phrases like Cierra la puerta (Close the door) or tazas (cups) and placas (plates). I felt a great sense of pride as I memorized each phrase, feeling like I was not just reading, but connecting with another language. Our visitors were grateful, and I was enchanted by the unique accents we shared for the same words.

This early experience sparked a lifelong passion for language and culture. My professional journey led me into teaching, where I explored different educational systems around the world. I had a taste of teaching Grundschule (elementary) in Germany, which deepened my fascination with language and education, followed by a year of teaching Chugakko (middle school) in Japan, where I embraced the rich diversity of learning environments.

Today, I continue to find beauty in learning about others—recognizing how much we all share and celebrating the richness of our differences, whether in language, accent, or culture.
